A very successful weekend for IBB Polonia London

The weekend was scheduled to be a tough one for IBB Polonia. The team from West London played two away matches. On Saturday, 16th March the encounter was against Sheffield Hallam which ended up with a victory in four sets 1:3 (24:26; 25:22; 16:25; 12:25). Sunday’s game was played even further north at the home venue of Durham Palatinates. The hosts, currently in second place in the Super League could not stop the momentum of the undefeated run of IBB Polonia London lasting from the start of the season. The match ended in yet another victory 0:3 (13:25; 19:25; 19:25). These victories guarantee at least a silver medal for the current season. Obviously the Club will not accept that colour medal and will push hard for gold.

Despite initial issues, the London team played well on Saturday. Their high class volleyball ensured that they managed to beat Sheffield Hallam in four sets.

‘We struggled to find our normal rhythm and energy the first two sets and the start of the third set. Then we had a couple of big plays and a great serving run by Dorian and it woke the team up and we played to a pretty high level from there. It was good to get a win and we continue to show we can step up a level when we need to.’ commented Phil Smith, IBB Polonia London middle blocker.

Sunday turned out even better than the Saturday. The tough prospect of Durham Palatinates was quickly put to bed in three sets. The victory not only strengthened the first place, but continued the unbeaten run.

‘We did a good job of being fairly clinical throughout and stuck to the game plan, which meant it was a relatively straight forward 3-0 win. Unfortunately Durham have been severely affected by the recent home office announcement on student visas, so were missing a lot of their stronger players. Hopefully the issues are sorted soon and we are able to test ourselves against their strongest team at home in a few weeks and then the Cup Final!’ added Smith.

There will be a short break for the London squad who return to court on 30th March when they play TeamBU Wessex. Fans can come and watch the game at Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre at 4.30PM London time. The NEVZA trophy, won in Denmark, will be on view for fans to see. Tickets will be available on-line. The return leg against Sheffield Hallam will be the final match of the season on 14th April and will be played at Crystal Palace National Sports centre. The main attraction will be Giba who will be playing his first match as an IBB Polonia London player.

‘Our next game against Sheffield is exciting for all involved. We are still pushing to finish the season unbeaten and having Giba with us and playing in Crystal Palace will no doubt increase the desire for both teams to perform at their best.’ ended Smith.

The match with the volleyball legend will be ticketed, as usual, and tickets will be available on-line. There is still almost a month until the match of the decade, and the presence of such a quality volleyball player will no doubt be a highlight. However there will be a number of exciting attractions on the day, which will ensure everyone has a good time.
