CBL Polonia London – PGE Skra Bełchatów

Reigning English Champions CBL Polonia London completed a historical trip to central Poland over the weekend. A new partnership between the biggest clubs in Poland and England had been established over the last few weeks and culminated in a huge encounter between the teams of PGE Skra Belchatow and CBL Polonia London.

The Head Coach of CBL Polonia London, Krzys Hykiel, and the vice-president, Bartek Luszcz, were invited as guests of PGE Skra Belchatow to observe and learn how the biggest club team in Europe works on a day to day basis. The town of Belchatow was preparing for the opening of the 2013/4 season in the form of a three day celebration of volleyball; the highlight of which was to be an exhibition match between the two teams.

'I was honoured to have been invited by PGE Skra’s Head Coach, Miguel Falasca, to observe their training sessions during my stay there. It was an amazing chance for me to see some of the world’s best players on court in front of me. Mariusz Wlazly, Stefan Antiga, Daniel Plinski, Facundo Conte, Karol Klos, are just some of the sport’s megastars that I watched for many hours’ said Krzys Hykiel. During the stay it quickly became evident that PGE Skra were missing one or two players who were currently on national duty abroad. Hykiel continued 'A new experience for me as a coach, was the discussion of a potential loan of one of the CBL Polonia London players, setter Bartek Kisielewicz, to PGE Skra in the absence of their second setter. Vice-President Bartek Luszcz and I were invited into the club president’s office to discuss the idea of this mutually beneficial arrangement between the two clubs’.

On saturday evening, close to 2000 fervent fans packed the Energia sports hall in the sleepy town of Belcahtow to watch, as the announcer put it; ’ the Manchester United of English Volleyball’ take on their heroes PGE Skra. The fans that watched the proceedings were not only dressed in the home team’s yellow and black colours, but the visitors from London had brought some of their own faithful sporting red and white of CBL Polonia London. Polish volleyball fans are not only the most vocal, but also the most knowledgeable in the world and it was jaw dropping to watch the match take place with all spectators going wild for the excellent play from both teams. One of the guests of honour at the match CBL president Piotr Kubalka was presented by a gift by the PGE Skra president. Following the match Kubalka said 'I was honoured and very moved to have received such a gift and to have been invited by PGE Skra to such a significant event for my team CBL London’.

The match itself was outstanding. During the warm up the superstars from PGE Skra destroyed ball after ball into the floor. Coach Hykiel had instructed his players that they should focus on their own warm up and not watch their opponents: and this they did very well.

Not only was the fact that the match was taking place a historical event, but few people expected the English champions to have much of a chance. The gulf in experience, money, infrastructure, support and coaching staff and players that the two teams boast is vast. ’ CBL Polonia London’s vice president said after the game that 'We have just witnessed the biggest and most significant match for any club team in English volleyball history; I am so proud of my players, they all performed remarkably calmly under such enormous pressure’. Everyone connected with the club and in England should applaud their achievement. And the reason for his joy: CBL Polonia London not only competed strongly in all but one of the sets, but they won the third set 26-24! In the end the favourites won the match 3-1, but both teams were applauded at the end by the spectators.

There are plans to continue this cooperation and to play again– this time in London.

Siatkarscy Mistrzowie Anglii – zawodnicy CBL Polonia Londyn powrócili już do Anglii po odbyciu w ostatni weekend historycznej podróży do Polski. Wyjazd ten był efektem współpracy zawiązanej pomiędzy jednymi z największych klubów Polski i Anglii – CBL Polonią i PGE Skrą Bełchatów, a jego celem był udział CBL Polonii w III Zlocie Kibiców PGE Skry Bełchatów oraz rozegranie meczu sparingowego pomiędzy oboma drużynami.

Partnerstwo obu klubów oprócz propagowania siatkówki i zacieśnianiu relacji polsko-angielskich ma na celu sportowy i organizacyjny rozwój CBL Polonii – dlatego na kilka dni przed przyjazdem całej drużyny do Bełchatowa w mieście pojawili się trener CBL Polonii Chris Hykiel oraz wiceprezes drużyny Bartek Łuszcz. Mieli oni okazję podpatrzeć jak na co dzień działa i trenuje jeden z najlepszych klubów siatkarskich na świecie.

„To dla mnie wielki honor, aby zostać zaproszonym przez trenera PGE Skry Miguela Falascę do wzięcia udziału w ich treningu – to niesamowite doświadczenie zobaczyć jednych z najlepszych siatkarzy trenujących na hali tuż obok mnie. Wlazły, Antiga, Pliński, Conte i Kłos – to gwiazdy naszego sportu, których grę podziwia każdy trener na świecie” – po wiedział trener CBL Polonii Chris Hykiel.

W jednym z treningów PGE Skry udział wziął rozgrywający CBL Polonii – Bartosz Kisielewicz – zapełnił on lukę, którą w drużynie PGE Skry wywołał wyjazd ich zawodnika na zgrupowanie kadry narodowej. Kisielewicz na treningu spisał się doskonale i gdyby nie organizacyjne trudności prawdopodobnie zostałby zaproszony do trenowania z drużną PGE Skry przez najbliższy miesiąc.

W sobotni wieczór około 2000 fanów zebrało się w bełchatowskiej hali Energia, aby obejrzeć pierwszy w sezonie mecz PGE Skry. Tym razem przeciwnikami była drużyna Mistrzów Anglii, opisywana przez spikera jako „Manchester United siatkówki”. Pośród ubranych w czarno-żółte barwy kibiców PGE Skry było też czterech ubranych w biało-czerwone barwy Polonii – to przedstawiciele jedynego w Anglii klubu kibica działającego przy drużynie siatkarskiej. Pokonali oni ponad 1600 km aby dopingować swoją drużynę. Oprócz współpracy na poziomu klubowym PGE Skrę i CBL Polonię łączy przyjaźń klubów kibica.

Mecz rozpoczął się miłą ceremonią przekazania pamiątkowej tablicy Panu Piotrowi Kubalce – właścicielowi firmy Capital Business Links – strategicznego sponsora CBL Polonii. Ponad 8000 widzów transmisji internetowej obejrzało prezesa PGE Skry Konrada Piechockiego wręczającego obramowaną replikę srebrnego medalu zdobytego przez PGE Skrę w Lidze Mistrzów.

„Jestem bardzo dumny z moich siatkarzy – tan wygrany set to najprawdopodobniej najważniejszy set wygrany przez angielską drużynę ligową w meczy międzynarodowym. Zobaczyliśmy jak wiele dzieli nas od PGE Skry sportowo i organizacyjnie – przepaść jest ogromna, ale niesamowita okazja porównania się do tak klasowego klubu, jakim jest PGE Skra pozwala nam wyznaczać cele na przyszłość. Mamy do nadgonienia wiele lat – ale z pomocą PGE Skry na pewno uda nam się szybko podnieść poziom całej angielskiej siatkówki” – powiedział po spotkaniu wiceprezes CBL Polonii Londyn Bartek Łuszcz.

Współpraca obu drużyn będzie kontynuowana i już planowany jest mecz rewanżowy – tym razem w Londynie.
