The reigning Champions of England extend their unbeaten run
Following a lengthy period with no competitive matches, IBB Polonia London travelled north once again to play Sheffield Hallam, the fourth placed team in England, on the 15th February 2020. The match was very even, which made it all the more attractive for the spectators. The Londoners were the team to come away with all three points, taking the encounter 1:3 (26:24; 21:25; 23:25; 20:25), and extending their lead in the SuperLeague.
The match started off with neither team able to exert an effective lead on the other. Both teams established their rhythms and the game went point for point. The home team took the first set 26-24. The following sets followed a very similar pattern, but it was IBB Polonia London who showed greater character at the end of the sets, and it was they who showed their class in key moments.
“It wasn’t an easy win, because all the teams play against the top and undefeated team giving everything to beat them. I think in reality, it was a bit easier for us. We have different team compare to previous games vs Sheffield, with a number of key players missing or injured. It was a good challenge for the entire squad. Another contributing issue, was that we had only from nineteenth of December one official game, so it is not easy for the team to have rhythm.” – said IBB Polonia London Head Coach, Vangelis Koutouleas.
There is no time to rest now, the team returns to its training court, in order to prepare for the next game which takes place on 22nd February 2020. There has been a long absence of home games, but the Semi Final of the National Cup will be the next home encounter in Brentford. The opposition that the Greek coach has to unpick is the local rival – Malory Eagles. The winners take the place in the Cup Final. Tickets are online and the match starts at 4.30PM. It is set to be an epic encounter as usual. Following such a long absence from their own sports hall, IBB Polonia London’s keen to show themselves in the best possible light and to enjoy the fervent atmosphere in the spectators’ seats as usual.
“We return after a long break to Brentford. It is an important match as we fight for the subsequent Cup title. We really hope all of our fans will come and encourage us as usual. We really need the support of our fans and volleyball fans too. Knowing we have such loyal supporters is key for us, and we urge them to be noisy as usual! We will be waiting for you. Have fun in the stands and help us to win again! See you soon.” Concluded Koutouleas.
